One of the difficulties with human life is that there are moments and experiences that lead to grief and loss. Grief and loss is a complicated process of various, intense emotions that take time, patience, and compassion to acknowledge and learn to live with.
The 5 Stages of Grief and Loss
- Denial
- Anger
- Bargaining
- Depression
- Acceptance
When Does Grief and Loss Occur?
Typically, grief and loss is associated with the loss of something we value in life. As we age, we may become connected to more and more people, pets, and/or groups/organizations. These factors then work to create and support our sense of self, overall identity, and self-esteem/worth.
Thus, grief and loss occurs when one or more of these connections to the things we value is severed. This could mean that someone we love moves away or passes away, for example. Because of the connection we had with this person, we then experience the above stages of grief and loss in no certain order or set timeframe.
What Are Some Situations Where Grief and Loss May Occur?
- Losing someone you love
- The loss of a pet
- Changes in one’s ability or functioning
- Job loss
- Divorce/Separation
- Traumatic Brain Injury
- Trauma
Can Grief and Loss Be Avoided?
In most cases no, as most people have connections to things that they care about in their lives. In an extreme case, a person could limit their connections and communication with others to a point where that person may not have ties to others. But this is an extreme case.
Can Grief Counseling in Colorado Help This Process?
As mentioned in Healthline’s article ‘The Stages of Grief and What to Expect’ grief and loss are a natural part of life. We would not experience grief and loss if we didn’t form meaningful connections with people, pets, or family.
The grief and loss process is different for every person and takes it’s natural course for everyone. If you experience grief and loss, finding therapist that has experience with grief and loss can be quite helpful. Again, this process cannot be rushed or fast tracked. A resource for folks in the Westminster area of the Kenosha Metro Area is Beth Gustin. She is highly trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy and experienced in supporting those in the grief and loss process.
