EMDR Intensives to Heal Trauma

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy has proven its ability to heal trauma in individual therapy settings. Excitingly, EMDR therapy has also been utilized in EMDR intensives to heal trauma. EMDR intensives can be a great way to reprocess single-incident traumas. It is not beneficial for more Completed Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) situations, for example, chronic childhood abuse or years of work as a first responder.

What Are EMDR Intensives?

EMDR intensives are shortened periods of treatment used to reprocess single traumatic or overwhelming experiences.  Typically, EMDR intensives cover a single incident or shorter periods of stress or overwhelm. EMDR intensives quickly move through topics and do not provide the depth needed to heal chronic traumatization or prolonged childhood neglect. Because this work involves humans, EMDR intensives cannot guarantee that any or all targets will be reprocessed during the allotted time frames.

How Do EMDR Intensives Work?

In most cases, EMDR intensives will be broken down into three main periods. The first period will cover phases one and two of the EMDR protocol. The second period will include phases three through six (where the actual reprocessing of targets takes place). This phase is usually four hours in length. The third period then includes phases seven and eight and is used to review reprocessed material.

Individual EMDR Therapy Near Racine, WI

At times, someone begins an EMDR intensive to tackle certain topics or painful memories. However, after the intensive is completed, there may be lingering targets to reprocess. This person may benefit from transitioning to individual EMDR therapy to continue the forward momentum that has started. This transition can ensure all needed EMDR targets can be reprocessed.

What’s the Difference Between EMDR Individual Therapy and EMDR Intensives?

The eight-phases of EMDR treatment are spread out over multiple sessions and weeks and months. Individual EMDR therapy is broken out into either single weekly or bi-weekly sessions over time. Conversely, EMDR intensives are typically held over a few days or three times during a three-week period of time. The EMDR intensives are shorter in length but may not go as deep as regular weekly EMDR therapy sessions.
