Fatherhood After Trauma: Tools for Emotional Recovery and Connection

Fatherhood, in and of itself, can be a very challenging transition. The transition into fatherhood and being a dad can be made more difficult due to past trauma. Trauma can have a significant impact on your life. Yet, it’s not so much if you’ve experienced trauma, but how you begin to heal from it to better your life that begins to define your life. This blog post will contain tools for emotional recovery and connection.

The Pain of Trauma

Having a baby is easy. Becoming the man you desire requires patience, healing, and, possibly, individual trauma therapy in Wisconsin.

Trauma is a broad category. Many different types of events can create trauma or even Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Some of these will be listed below, but this is not an exclusive list.

  • Grief from child loss.
  • Losing a partner to cancer.
  • Childhood trauma that reoccurs once you become a father.
  • Trauma related to employment, i.e. first responder trauma, combat trauma, medical-related trauma, betrayal trauma, and being a nurse or medical doctor.

Trauma’s Effects Later in Life

Trauma disrupts how the nervous system functions. The nervous system is fluid and responds differently to different situations, effectively and meaningfully, to help us navigate life. However, trauma dysregulates this process. This nervous system dysregulation can create many different forms of trauma symptoms to include exhaustion, intrusive thoughts, low motivation, disrupted sleep cycles, and even impact someone’s appetite.

At first, these types of symptoms may be manageable. But over time, they can wear on somebody’s quality of life. Irritation can turn to anger quickly, and this can disrupt connections with children or loved ones. Fatigue and exhaustion may impact work performance, leading to job loss. Depending on the type of traumatic event that was experienced, our ability to trust ourselves and others can become disrupted. These things can combine to interfere with their quality of life and their values.

Somatic Experiencing Therapy to Heal Trauma

Somatic experiencing therapy near Burlington, Wisconsin, is a natural way to allow your body to heal from the past overwhelming stress and trauma of life. This form of psychotherapy naturally identifies and tracks how your body responds to stress, overwhelming emotions, and past pain. By engaging in somatic experiencing therapy, you can integrate past experiences, which allows trauma symptoms to dissipate. Through somatic experiencing therapy, you’ll be able to regulate the nervous system, which is typically dysregulated by traumatic experiences. From trauma therapy, you’ll be able to increase your responsiveness to situations versus react when stress arises. Start healing and find yourself again with somatic experiencing therapy near you.
